I’ve always wanted one of these as a kid (and I still did) so it was nice to be able to finally order one. My young son was very excited to try this out as well.The device seems to be durable for the most part, though I wouldn’t expect it to survive a drop from more than a few feet. It could probably get thrown in a bag with other gear and get tossed around without any issues.The key thing to note about this type of device compared with optical binoculars is that here you are staring at a screen that is inside the device roughly 6 inches away from your eyes. If you need reading glasses like I do your eyes won’t be able to focus on the screen. This is not an issue with optical binoculars since the focal distance is optically controlled to match your eye’s focal point. With this one, changing the focus will not affect the focal distance between your eyes and the screen. With that said it is possible to pull the binoculars farther away from your eyes so that the screen can be seen clearly, though the image appears smaller.The night vision works great and has different levels of intensity. Really it is an active type of system that illuminates the scene with an infrared light and the sensor inside the unit is sensitive to that light. The (infra)red light can be seen by the naked eye so there is at least some portion of the light spectrum in the visible range. This may be an issue if the device is used for hunting or other uses where you don’t want to be seen. Related is the fact that the silicone doesn’t make full contact around my face so my face glows from the backlight of the screen. That is made worse by me having to pull the binoculars further away from my face to be able to focus on the screen. That could easily be remedied by using a black towel or something like they did in the old days for photography.The device comes with a micro SD card that can record video or photos at the press of a button.Overall this is basically a toy but it could be used for more serious purposes like hunting or walking around in a dark area at night with the above stated limitations. Either way this is fun to use.
