Make sure you extend the front of the flashlight to not only control the width of the beam, but also to ensure that it can start a fire easily with the special lens. If you don’t extend the front of the flashlight all the way out, it will not start a fire. However, when used properly it absolutely kicks ass. Within a few seconds I was able to start a flame with various materials. Works better than I was expecting. And for the price, it is a pretty strong beam. It is much brighter than most flashlights.

Battery life appears good with this, it’s bright with focusing range. It feels pretty hefty and solid – I believe it has a one-year warranty, and I don’t think I’m going to need it! Perfect timing on mailing (thanks) in that the day it arrived… my neighbor was struggling in the dark to start her snowblower. I was able to ‘shed some light on the matter’. I also use it with the dogs out at night, since it gets dark around 5 yet (sigh).I haven’t tried to start any fires, but I like this design (focused lens) over ‘electric starters’ that tend to drain batteries rapidly. It makes sense, and I am surprised other companies haven’t adapted! I liked this enough to buy my Alaskan-bush-living brother one for Christmas, under the assumption he can always use another flashlight / fire starter.
