First off, I already knew these were digital NVG. I had already watched a ton of videos on the NVG30/NVG20. So, the fact that the seller has PVS-14 in the advertisement is laughable. They are indeed really good digital NVG units. I haven’t tested them mounted to the helmet yet, although the Mount seems pretty sturdy. HOWEVER, if you buy these with the expectations of them performing anywhere remotely close to the level of even a basic PVS-14 will, you will be woefully disappointed. Many of the videos you’ll see on YouTube about the NVG30 will imply that you don’t need the IR Illuminator on in most situations. Well, tonight was a very clear night and decently bright moon, I could barely see out through my yard or to my driveway. Now, you flip the IR on and you can see everything perfectly clear and they work very well.If you’re buying these for just walking and observing stuff at night, they’ll probably be fine. I haven’t checked the recording abilities. I wasn’t interested in that. If you’re wanting these for tactical/training reasons, they will absolutely give you an edge against those who don’t have any kind of NVG capabilities. However, if whoever you’re going against also has NVG capabilities, especially if they’re using good analog NVG such as a PVS-7, PVS-14, or better, and they know what they’re doing, things aren’t going to go very well for you. Mainly due to the NVG30/NVG20 (really any digital NVG device) will need to use the IR Illuminator or some form of supplemental IR lighting more than an analog NV setup will. And once you flip that IT Illuminator on, anyone near you with NV will be able to see you. Just food for thought.
